Julianne Colwell is a saxophonist and vocalist from Tucson, Arizona. Her love for jazzfirst inspired by the Dave Brubeck Quartet, began when she entered middle school. She started out on alto saxophone but switched to baritone sax when she was asked to join the Ellington Big Band at the Tucson Jazz Institute. It won first place in its division at the Essentially Ellington and Next Generation Jazz Festivals in 2012, performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York, and its album recorded that same year earned honors from Downbeat magazine. Julianne studied with Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Brice Winston as well as with Kelland Thomas during high school, then was accepted into Berklee College of Music in Boston and The School of Jazz at The New School in New York before choosing to attend Arizona State University to study under Michael Kocour, Bryon Ruth, and Jeff Libman. Julianne has one semester remaining at ASU, where she will graduate with a BA in jazz studies and saxophone performance.

The Nash Emerging Artists Series is a summer concert series features performances by young artists born in or based in Arizona. Curated by The Nash, the series provides a platform for these emerging artists to gain prominence in the jazz community. The Nash Emerging Artists Series is very much an educational program as well as a performance series. Those artists or groups selected to play in the series will be offered a free clinic by an experienced Arizona jazz educator in advance of their performance at The Nash.
