Mike Shellans has been a professional performer and music educator in the Phoenix area for nearly forty years, joining the ASU School of Music faculty in 1983, As a Senior Lecturer at ASU, Shellans has taught fourteen different courses to over 50,000 students, including Jazz in America, concert jazz band, arranging, improvisation and jazz piano. Shellans also created, helped design and currently teaches Music of the Beatles, Beatles After the Beatles, Blues to Heavy Metal, Women Who Rock and Elvis Presley, fully online courses with a total annual enrollment of over 4,000 students. Shellans co-authored two books: Here To Stay: Rock and Roll Through the ’70s, and his Who is the Greatest: Elvis or the Beatles?

Shellans has played both piano and trombone since the age of nine and has performed with a wide variety of entertainers, including Bob Hope, The Moody Blues, Henry Mancini, Sammy Davis Jr., George Burns, Ray Charles, The Temptations, Wayne Newton, The Four Tops, Gladys Knight, Natalie Cole and The O’Jays. He has also played in pit orchestras for numerous musicals and has performed with and/or attended clinics by Bobby Herriot, Eric Marienthal, Dizzy Gillespie, Marian McPartland, Matt Catingub, Dexter Gordon, Dave Friesen, Clark Terry, Bill Watrous, Gary Burton, Ron Carter, Stan Getz, Bill Evans, Bud Brisbois, Frank Rosolino, Billy Eckstein, Bobby Shew, Pete Chrislieb, Louis Bellson and others.
