THE NAME THAD JONES conjures up thoughts of one of America’s great jazz bands—the Thad Jones- Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra. Begun in the mid-1960s and made up of some of the finest studio musicians in New York, the band started regular Monday night performances at the Village Vanguard. It continued through the 1980s, directed by drummer Mel Lewis, and exists today as the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. It still plays Thad’s wonderful compositions.

A 1966 recording, featuring a quintet with Thad Jones and legendary baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams, made it very clear that Thad’s tunes had a special place in jazz repertoire in any format. This recording was the basis for the group formed by trumpeter Mike Crotty and bari saxophonist Paul Brewer. They have also added many of Thad’s tunes rarely performed in this format.
