What do Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Tadd Damaron, Dean Martin, Mongo Santamaria, Lena Horne, Buddy Rich, Jo Stafford and Thelonious Monk all have in common? They were all born in 1917, a monumental in jazz history. Not only was it the year of the first official jazz recording, but some of the most famous names in American music were born then — artists whose contributions would help to make jazz the most significant cultural movement of the century.
Join the Dmitri Matheny Group for JAZZ 100, an all-star celebration of this momentous centennial, as we highlight classic jazz by these legendary artists!
Voted “Northwest Instrumentalist of the Year” in this year’s Seattle Earshot Jazz Golden Ear Awards, flugelhornist Dmitri Matheny has been lauded as “one of the most emotionally expressive improvisers of his generation” (International Review of Music). First introduced to jazz audiences in the 1990s as the protégé of the legendary Art Farmer, Matheny has matured into “one of the jazz world’s most talented horn players” (San Francisco Chronicle).
