During the month of June, The Nash hosts a series of week-long summer workshops for all ages. These workshops include topics of Latin-Jazz, vocal performance, performing in combos and more. The Nash is proud to host our Summer Jazz Workshops every year. This program is a great opportunity for people of all ages and skill levels to learn from our distinguished faculty in a small group setting, while interacting with other aspiring musicians. The workshops cover a wide variety of topics and offer something for everyone. So, get out of the heat and get into some jazz at The Nash this summer! Listed below are representative courses that have been part of our Summer Jazz Workshops series.

Improvisation Essentials – Pamela Morita
The Improvisation Essentials Workshop helps students begin to speak the language of jazz by learning the harmonic structure of scales, arpeggios, and chords. No prior experience of playing jazz is required, but knowledge of major scales and chords in all keys is helpful. Open to all ages and experience levels.

Jazz Combo Workshop – Adam Roberts
Working in a small group setting, the Jazz Combo Workshop focuses on playing and communicating with others on the band stand. This workshop is a fun and interactive exploration of what happens during a performance. Open to all students with at least one year of experience on their instrument.

Traditional Jazz Workshop – Richard Brennan and Liam Connor
Working in small and large group settings, the Traditional Jazz Workshop focuses on music from the New Orleans tradition made popular by artists such as Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet, and Bix Beiderbecke. The workshop is a fun and exciting exploration of the music of ragtime, early swing, hot jazz, and more. Open to all students with at least two years of experience on their instrument.

Neo Soul – Carly Bates
Neo-soul is a genre of Black American Music that artists such as Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, D’Angelo, Lauryn Hill, and Maxwell shaped in the 1980s and 90s. Participants of the Neo-Soul workshop learn and study the rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic functions of their respective instrument and the stylings appropriate to the genre. Participants must have experience reading sheet music and chord charts or demonstrate an intermediate-level facility of their instrument. All ages welcome.

Latin Jazz Workshop – Raul Yáñez
Focusing on Afro-Cuban Jazz and Mambo literature made popular by artists such as Mario Bauza, Machito Grillo, Eddie Palmieri, and Chucho Valdéz. Under the direction of master musician and teacher Raul Yanez, this workshop is an inspiring and culturally enriching musical experience. Open to all students with at least two years of experience on their instrument.

Vocal Jazz – Dennis Rowland
The Vocal Jazz Workshop focuses on the vocalist’s role in a jazz ensemble. Through performance, vocalists and instrumentalists will explore the basics of what to listen for when performing with an ensemble, how to choose tunes and keys, intros and endings, improvisation and vocal techniques. Open to all ages and experience levels.
